Congressional Black Caucus

More than 80 high school students got their financial futures off to the right start thanks to a daylong seminar hosted in September by the Federal Reserve Banks of Boston, Cleveland, Dallas, Kansas City and Philadelphia.

The seminar was part of the Youth Leadership Summit that took place during the Congressional Black Caucus’s (CBC) Annual Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C.

Students from both the Kansas City, Mo., and Washington, D.C. areas learned about banking basics, credit, entrepreneurship and college preparation. The session featured information from Dallas’ and Boston’s financial awareness programs, as well as details about Banking on Our Future, a website that teaches students how to manage their money.

Keynote speakers stressed the importance of financial awareness and responsibility. Speakers included John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation Hope, Sirena Moore, CEO and entrepreneur, Elohim Cleaning Contractors, and Missouri Congressman Emanuel Cleaver.

To highlight financial awareness in the Kansas City metro area, the Kansas City Fed sponsored a 2011 Youth Leadership Summit video contest around the theme: “How do hope, engagement and well-being impact financial success?” The top prize was awarded to students at Ruskin High School in Kansas City. The winning team traveled to Washington, D.C. to participate in the conference. Watch Ruskin’s award winning video or view photos from the event below.
